What Does a Garage Door Opener Do?
Many of our customers think the garage door opener is the remote. Technically, the opener is the motorized part the cranks the parts that push or pull the door. Normally, it is located in the middle of the garage, above the tracks that your door is on. There are some types that are in different locations.
When you push the button on your remote, wall, or use a keypad, it will send a signal to the opener to move the working parts. As it moves, the door will either be pulled opened or pushed closed. If something isn’t functioning correctly, it will keep these functions from performing.
Is There More Than One Type of Opener?
The short answer is, yes, there are more than one type of opener. Each of the different types are installed for different types of systems. Depending on the system that you have will determine which one is best.
Our technicians will help you to figure out which opener works with your assembly. They have the ability to get in the proper parts for your repairs. Since we are licensed, we can order from any garage door manufacturer.
What Are The Different Functions?
There are a few different functions you will need to decide on for your new garage door opener. Of course, the main purpose of the opener is to operate the automatic functions of the door. However, some of the openers can do other things such as:
- Provide light in the garage
- Reduce noise
- Have wi-fi capabilities
Not sure which one is best suited for your needs? Do not hesitate to ask our technicians. They can answer all of your questions and let you know which one is best for your home. Also, our phone staff is capable of answering some of your questions as well.
There are several reasons that your opener may not be working. To rule out some problems, you can try these troubleshooting ideas:
- Check the power source- see if the opener is plugged in. Use the remotes to try and open it. If there seems to be power, then that’s not the issue.
- Release the emergency cord- pull the emergency cord release and try to manually open the door. If the door can open, then it is likely something wrong with the opener.
- Reset the opener- you can unplug the opener and leave it that for 30-60 seconds. Then, plug it back in. Sometimes, that will reset anything that is off.
If you try these things and they do not work, then there may be something else wrong with the opener. Our technicians can figure out exactly what’s wrong with the part.
Why Won’t My Remote Work?
Your remote may not be working for several reasons as well. For one thing, the battery may be dead. Go ahead change the battery to see if that is the cause. Even if the battery is not fully dead, if it is too low, it can keep it from working.
Another reason it may not be working could be that it is not programmed to the opener. If it is a new remote, it will need to be programmed. You can try to reset the remote by taking the batteries out for 30-60 seconds and see if that changes things. Otherwise, you will need to check and see if it is programmed to your opener.
To program your remote, you will need to make certain the dip switches line up. These switches are located inside of your remote as well as the opener. The pattern must match one another for the remote to work your opener.
How to Program Your Opener To Your Remote
If you want to program your new opener to your remote, you’ll need to remove the panel on the remote and find the dip switches. Then, you will need a ladder to reach your opener. You will have to locate the switches on the opener.
Choose the pattern that you want to use for the remote and then duplicate that on the opener. If it is still not working, then get one of our technicians out to do the re-programming. They can set it for you and determine if there is something else going on.
What’s the Right Frequency For Your Opener?
Another problem that you might be having with your remote and opener is the frequency. The frequency that it is set to can be interfered by other devices. That is why it is best to keep it between 300-400MHz.
If your door is opening or closing when you haven’t pushed the button, that is a good indication that the frequency is off. It could be that some other device is causing it to work. Also, if you are trying to use your remote or keypad and it is not working, that also could be an indicator.
Different Types of Openers
There are four basic types of openers. The Jackshaft is actually a newer type of opener on the market. In general, our customers have either screw, belt, or chain drive openers.
Here’s a look at each one and what they do:
- Screw Drive- this has a threaded rod that moves and causes the trolley go across the tracks.
- Belt Drive- the belt drive uses a belt to push and pull the door. It is the quietest system.
- Jackshaft- the great thing about a jackshaft is that it does not have to be installed on the ceiling. This opener is great for customers that have two story garage ceilings or very heavy doors.
- Chain Drive- a chain drive is like a belt drive, only it uses a chain. It is not as quiet as the belt drive, therefore it is most cost efficient.
Our technician can answer all of your questions about the different types of openers.
